Tasmanian Wilderness Patchwork
The basalt and dolerite are prominent in the soils and structure of its iconic landforms from the Nut at Stanley and Cradle Mountain in the northwest, through the highland lakes and Mount Field National Park to the tessellated pavement at Eaglehawk Neck and basalt columns of Tasman Island in the southeast. However, the real beauty of its wilderness lies immersed and hidden within this framework. To truly experience the wonders of Tasmania’s natural beauty, one must enter its wild places and become immersed in the surroundings; one must get up close and personal to the natural gems that lie within. This painting portrays this concept by using the shapes of a tessellated pavement as its broad structural element and, embedded within this structure, vignettes of some of the magnificent natural features that lay in our Tasmanian landscape. This is NOT a collage. The painting was done on a single sheet and many of the vignettes can be seen among the Small Format Paintings on this website. Painted in 2019.
