After a Days Work
This was an exercise to maximise the use of light to create a focal point. The reference material was black and white. Painted in 2020.
I am always taken by alleyways and narrow streets. This is an alley in Perigord France to which I added a cat to give it some life. Painted in 2019.
This painting depicts a street scene of a parasol display in Sarlat France. I loved the texture of the brickwork and the obvious signs that it had undergone a number of renovations over the years.
Painted in 2009.
Balcon de Parasols 2
My partner was so disgusted with me for selling the original that I had to produce another one. I improved the composition in this painting by overlapping the parasols. Painted in 2019.
Gigermetrics
This painting is called "Giger-metrics". It depicts the view of HR Giger's "Torso" looking through the 'epiglotic windows' of Giger's bar in Gruyere Switzerland. Apart from the "Torso" itself, the arrangement of the geometric shapes inspired me to paint this. Painted in 2012.
This painting depicts coming into Wynyard along Bass Highway as the sun was setting. The intent was to capture the light on the gables and front fences of the houses along the highway.
In The Style of Bei
This was my first real attempt to "draw" with a loaded paint brush, without worrying what the paint eventually did but go with the flow. A lot of fun but very stressful. Happy with the result. I used a painting by Bei as my inspiration and although the composition is similar, the differences in the result and quite apparent. Painted in 2020.
Morning Meditation
This is an adaptation of a scene from a castle south of Perigeaux in France. The intent was to catch the morning light streaming through the arched window. The idea of the religious monk in robes sitting on the side bench was to give the paining a little mystery.
Picture of Wynyard Wharf on the Inglis River, northwest Tasmania. Painted in 2011.
My intent was to highlight the shadows and the light on the bell in this bell tower in Sarlat France. I added the pidgeon because I like to see something living in all my paintings. Painted in early 2010.
This subject is in a formal garden at Birr Castle in Ireland - a marvelous place with much astronomical engineering history including one of the world's first terrestial telescopes though which the heavens were observed.
This was a street scene along a canal on a warm Saturday morning in the Dorsoduro district of Venice. The thought that the girl was out taking the pidgeon for a walk was what inspired me to paint this rather complex subject.
